H-1B Visa Extension
H-1B visas allow U.S. employers to hire foreign workers who possess specialized knowledge temporarily. Under most circumstances, the visa starts at three years initially and can last up to six years with an extension.
Before the initial three-year expiration arrives, the applicant may submit an H-1B extension petition. Extensions beyond six years may be available if the green card process (PERM or I-140) is underway before the 5th year ends
Note
- H-1B extensionscan be filed as early as six months before the current visa expires
- As there are more H-1B applicants every year, the processing time for extension becomes longer too; it is now approximately one tofive months at the moment
- The extension may experience an even longer wait time if the applicant receives an RFE (Request for Evidence) notice.
